A mattress is the one thing in the house that gets eight hours of use a night and almost never gets cleaned. It is also the one where the reason to clean it has very little to do with how it looks.
The honest interval
Twice a year for most beds. Every three to four months if someone in the house has asthma or a dust allergy, if a pet sleeps on the bed, or if the room does not get much air.
Turning and vacuuming it yourself between times does most of the work. A proper clean is for what a vacuum cannot lift.
What is actually in there
Dead skin, which is what dust mites live on; sweat, roughly half a litre a night in summer; and the residue of anything spilled on it since the day it arrived. None of that is visible from the top, which is why beds that look fine are usually the ones most worth doing.
What it costs
A single is £25, a double £35, a king £40 and a super king £45. Both sides of any size is £10 more, and worth it if the mattress has never been turned.
Drying is two to four hours, so a morning appointment means you are sleeping in it that night.
